Task 11

December 15, 2008

I created wiki pages for my Bio 2 class to use for their group projects, much like Brian did for his APES class.  It has been successful for some students more than others at this point, but I haven’t checked to see if they added anything over the weekend.  I’m going to try it again next term, especially for cooperative studying.  I think as students get more familiar with it, they will use it more productively.

The Sandbox served me well–I got several suggestions for children’s books that I have already ordered.

Task 10

December 15, 2008

I checked out the websites suggested, and even went searching.  I found one, but it was pretty boring, and I probably won’t use it in class.  There are several interactive web sites that I use consistently.  One is the University of Utah site on genetics,http://learn.genetics.utah.edu/, another is http://dnai. org, and the Howard Hughes website http://www.hhmi.org. is very useful for genetics.

Task 7

November 7, 2008

I read  the Wiki-Wiki classroom blog, and actually started to think about how to use a wiki for my class.  The idea of cooperative studying before a test seems to be a simple way to get started, but I am also thinking about ways to compile data that the entire class can then use.  I don’t have a project in mind at the moment, but the wheels are starting to turn.  I am wondering about how to assess such cooperative learning; unfortunately, we do have to somehow come up with a “grade” for students in high school.

I liked Brian’s food web project, and the fact that he could tell who had contributed to the information.  His site was easy to follow, and I plan to bug him for help on setting up a similar site.  (I’ve forewarned him already!)

Task 6

November 5, 2008

I checked out Skype, and enrolled, but I haven’t used it, yet.  I’ll let you know how that goes.  I also checked out the calendar program and even entered some things–I think it will be quite useful.

Task 4-comment on an RSS feed

I read the article from NY Times science about the vestibular system.  Very timely, as it fits in with the Brain class that I will teach during term B.  I’m beginning to find my way around this system on my own, finally.

task 3

This is getting marginally easier. I just learned that I need to understand this stuff for another organization, so now I have more incentive. Thanks, guys.

At the moment, I’m feeling pretty dumb about the blog, but Brandon assures me that it will get easier.
